Résumé : Partant de la réflexion sur le rôle d'Antigone dans la culture occidentale qui ressort de l'essai de George Steiner intitulé Les Antigones, cette thèse a pour objectif d'étudier l'évolution du mythe dans l'œuvre d'Henry Bauchau. En particulier, une étude approfondie de toutes les publications de l'auteur relatives au mythe thébain et une première investigation de matériaux inédits seront l'objet d'étude pour la reconstruction d'un processus d'écriture extrêmement complexe.
Our research focuses on defining a theoretical and methodological framework that places genetic criticism at the center of the analysis. This perspective allows us to extend the chronological scope traditionally associated with the composition of Œdipe sur la route and Antigone, taking into account the journals published between 1954 and 2012. In this context, Henry Bauchau’s journals emerge as a fundamental source: diaristic writing constitutes a creative laboratory in which the author’s observations and reflections gradually shape the novel.
A systematic comparison of the diaristic notes, drafts, and the published version of Œdipe sur la route reveals a genesis marked by successive modifications, demonstrating the coherence of a compositional process based on revision and rewriting. Moreover, this approach is enriched by a detailed study of the characters: Bauchau reshapes the mythical figures of Œdipe and Antigone while also introducing new characters that expand the thematic and symbolic scope of the novel.
For Antigone, the Journal d’Antigone provides a particularly valuable point of observation. Its genetic analysis, based on the preserved drafts, makes it possible to trace the transition from diaristic writing to the novel’s final form. The recorded variants and revisions highlight the author’s choices and illuminate the rewriting process that underlies his entire oeuvre. This approach emphasizes the writing process of the novels and underscores the importance of annotations in organizing and structuring the text. It demonstrates that the journals lie at the heart of Bauchau’s creative workshop, offering insight into the logic of transformation that runs through his work, and rendering writing itself a space for experimentation and reflection on the creative process.
